After landing first off Kauai in January 1778, Captain Cook returned in January 1779 and made his contribution to history. Before dropping anchor in Kealakekua bay, he sailed between Maui and the island of Hawaii for SEVEN weeks giving the local population plenty of time to prepare their welcome
