  KI'I POHAKU, PETROGLYPHS, ROCK ART

What are Petroglyphs? -Latin for Rock-writing , now commonly termed Rock-Art, are the  ancient symbols engraved on stone surfaces around the world. Our only link to a World View lost in time, petroglyphs and rock painting, [pictographs] have been carbon dated to 30,000 years before our present 'history' or time frame began.

The southern tip of the Big Island of Hawai'i is a mostly arid district known as Ka'u. Possibly the landing site of the first settlers almost 1500 or more years ago. The environment ranges from sub-artic at the summit of Mauna Loa to lava and ash desert. Most of the shoreline is a dry and wind-blown volcanic fringe dotted with ancient ruins scattered among infrequent beaches or lagoons.  Perfect conditions for Rock Art. The uplands still support primeval forests.

How were the ki'i pohaku, [petroglyphs] made? Using the lava tablets at their feet an oral tradition was punctuated and illustrated with symbols representing an ancient belief-system.  But the chants, the words which accompanied these images have been lost to history. Using materials at hand these ancient people, like their counterparts around the globe, drew upon their environment and imaginations to create a home where they found themselves, on the largest volcano on earth. Petroglyphs around the world contain similar archetypal symbols which reflect humanity's development of abstract ideologies.

Explore one the largest lost galleries of Ka'u, Hawai'i.The lava tablets of pahoehoe surrounding Pohue Bay in Southwest Ka'u, Hawai'i, hold a significant population of petroglyphs. Many individual galleries can be found dispersed in this as yet undeveloped and remote area. Ancient foot trails are still visible winding their way across the volcanic landscape.
